Where Utopia Meets Dystopia: A Coworking Concept for the Future
Silversquare Louvain-la-Neuve redefines the coworking experience by exploring the dualities of utopia and dystopia. Conceived by Silversquare architects Dimitri Goloubev and Julie Van Huynegem, and brought to life by designer Lilian van Daal and scenographer Théo Demans, this space provokes thought while offering comfort. The interior merges art, architecture, and future-focused design to reflect on humanity’s evolving relationship with climate, technology, and nature. In the space, Theo was responsible for the Dystopian part and Lilian for the Utopian part.
Biophilic Design and the Power of Nature-Inspired Workspaces
Biophilic design is at the heart of this coworking space in the Utopian part, by Lilian. Surrounded by organic forms, natural light, and tactile materials, users are invited to reconnect with nature, even indoors. Research shows that biophilic environments can improve focus, creativity, and mental well-being. The space’s layout, flow, and atmosphere are consciously shaped to reduce stress and enhance a sense of belonging, making it not just a place to work, but a place to thrive.
BIOMIMICRY AND 3D PRINTING: CRAFTING FUNCTIONAL BEAUTY
Dutch designer Lilian van Daal uses biomimicry, the imitation of nature’s most efficient solutions, as a foundation for her work. Her designs for the “Utopia” section of the coworking space incorporate forms inspired by biological structures. These are brought to life using advanced 3D printing and bio-based materials, enabling efficient, single-material construction that is both beautiful and sustainable. The result is a series of objects and spaces that are adaptive, resilient, and perfectly suited to shared work environments.
reconnecting humans with nature through innovative workspaces
In a time where digital overload and environmental disconnect are common, the Utopian part offers a counterbalance: a physical space that restores the human-nature connection. Through the use of biophilic elements, nature-inspired geometry, and emotionally resonant materials, this coworking space becomes a regenerative environment, one that doesn't just support productivity, but also nurtures the people who work there.
