"There is no better designer than nature."
nature-inspired embankment reinforcement
Stroncq is a biodegradable and ecological embankment reinforcement tile, designed by Lilian van Daal, and inspired by the structural strength of plant root systems. Using biomimicry and 3D printing technology, Stroncq mimics nature's most efficient solution for stabilizing soil, plant roots.
The tile is printed from a sustainable material developed by Omlab, consisting of 98% residual flows from sewage and drinking water treatment. It is fully compostable and includes lime, which helps to counteract soil acidification. As it biodegrades, the embedded seeds begin to grow, and the real plant roots take over the structural function—creating a circular system where nature regains control.
Design, Technology, and Ecology in One Object
Stroncq is more than just a functional tile, it also acts as a seat, demonstrating the strength and design potential of ecological materials. Originally developed for Maacq Waar(de), a product innovation initiative by AquaMinerals and Omlab, Stroncq showcases how waste streams and nature-inspired engineering can lead to resilient, sustainable infrastructure solutions.
